GENERAL

Pediatric Dermatology

Located in Buckhead, East Cobb, and Midtown, and serving the surrounding areas of Atlanta and Marietta, the expert team of board-certified dermatologists at Dermatology Affiliates treats pediatric skin ailments via pediatric dermatology, and works to ensure that both child and parent have a comfortable, stress-free experience. We teach parents about their child’s skin problems to ensure that the child gets proper treatment and care at home. This helps to ensure that children will have healthy, problem-free skin as they mature. The field of pediatric dermatology focuses on comprehensively diagnosing and treating ailments of the skin that are unique to infants, children, and adolescents. There are many skin conditions that are shared by both children and adults, but there are certain skin problems that are more common among younger patients. These conditions require special care that is delivered with the special needs of growing children in mind. Younger patients often face a higher risk of bacterial skin infections, as well a variety of other acquired and hereditary conditions. We provide treatments that are both gentle and effective so that children can participate in their daily activities while managing their skin condition efficiently. Children with healthy skin should get regular examinations as well. During these examinations, they will learn about keeping their skin healthy by using proper sun protection and other forms of skin care. Here are some of the more common skin conditions that Dermatology Affiliates treats among younger patients:

Rashes

These are red and inflamed areas that can be the result of exposure to a variety of substances, including chemicals, certain soaps, and cosmetics, as well as plants such as poison ivy, anima dander, and other irritants. A vast number of conditions can produce rashes; these conditions can be acute or chronic and often occur in younger children. Simple home care practices such as avoiding soaps and bathing in warm water can be used to treat some rashes. Others may necessitate treatment that is more intensive. The treatment may require moisturizers along with the use of prescription drugs. In order to prevent rashes, parents can help their children avoid irritants and instruct them to wash their hands frequently.

Eczema

This condition is also known as atopic dermatitis. Eczema is a collective term referring to a set of skin conditions that cause chronic, itchy rashes. Between 10 and 20 percent of infants are born with eczema. The symptoms are a rash that appears on the child’s forehead, cheeks, trunk, as well as on their limbs. It may be triggered by exposure to harsh soaps, as well as to dust mites. Food allergies and certain clothing fabrics may also act as triggers. Eczema has no cure; however, symptoms can be relieved with the use of medications. Medications for treating eczema include topical steroids and antihistamines along with a class of drugs called immunomodulators. Home remedies such as cold compresses and bleach baths may also be effective.

Birthmarks

These are areas of skin that are discolored and may exhibit a range of colors. Birthmarks can be brown or red, pink or purple, and become visible during the first year of life. While most birthmarks are benign, some can develop into cancer and must be monitored. Because of a birthmark’s size and location, some patients may find them problematic and seek to have them removed. Treating birthmarks depends on the patient’s age and the nature of the lesion. Methods of treating them include laser surgery, pulsed light therapy, and surgical excision.

Acne

This refers to pimples, whiteheads, and other skin lesions that result from oil gland abnormalities. Acne has a range of causes including hormones, genetics, and stress. Other potential causes include cosmetics and bacteria. While acne can affect individuals of all ages, it is most common among teens. The vast majority of teenagers have acne to some extent, and as many as one-third in this age group seek treatment for it. Acne treatment varies based on how severe the acne, as well as its type and where the lesions are located. Among the treatments are oral medications, topical prescription medication, over-the-counter ointments, and laser treatments. Cortisone injections and isotretinoin may also be used to treat acne.
