What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a cosmetic filler containing hyaluronic acid (HA) that is designed to reduce lines and wrinkles around the mouth by adding volume to create a more youthful appearance. Restylane® is the most studied and tested HA-based cosmetic filler since its launch in 1996.
Restylane® FAQ
Restylane® is made primarily of non-animal HA, which closely resembles the HA found in our skin. The filler is injected into the area in small amounts with a fine gauge needle. When injected, it diminishes the appearance of lines and wrinkles especially those that are more prominent. This filler is designed for wrinkles and lines around the nose and mouth to give a softer, more natural look.
Restylane® takes effect instantly once it’s injected. The results are long lasting and have no effect on facial expressions.
The folds of the nose and around the mouth are the best places to receive Restylane® injections. The FDA has also approved it to correct and plump lips for patients over 21 years of age.
The procedure to inject Restylane® is very quick. Typically, the procedure takes about 45 minutes depending on the area(s) you want to correct and how long you prefer to numb.
Most patients find that Restylane® injections may cause very mild discomfort. A local anesthetic cream is placed on the areas in order to numb the skin. For lips, we do recommend local anesthesia or a dental block, as the lips are a very sensitive part of the body.
Depending on your skin type, lifestyle, and age, you can expect Restylane® to last six months to a year with lips lasting about six months. One of the great advantages of Restylane® is that the effects are long-lasting but not permanent. After the initial treatment, follow-up sessions are normally recommended around every 6 to 12 months depending on the individual and the treatment. A treatment of the lips lasts about 6 months.
