Decades of Skin Care – Tiffany Clay, MD

20s

Your 20s are the time to start working on aging gracefully. The foundation you lay now will have people complimenting your flawless skin when you hit your 40s & up. 1st of all, STOP TANNING! This includes “laying out” even if you are wearing sunscreen. Getting a slight tan is just as bad as a sunburn. It causes freckles, brown spots, wrinkles and discoloration. Spray or rub your color on!

Wear sunscreen on your face and neck every single day. Rain or shine. If your SPF is built into your daily moisturizer that’s perfect. Ideal daily SPF is 30 or higher. And yes you still need to apply it even if you’re not outside for long (if you leave your house at all then you’re getting ultraviolet exposure).

Moisturize! No matter if you have dry or oily skin because this will prevent dehydration of the skin. Dry skin leads to premature aging by causing low levels of inflammation. Pro-tip: get a daily moisturizer that contains SPF 30 to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Apply a prescription retinoid or over the counter retinol nightly. If you have acne, I suggest using a prescription retinoid from your dermatologist.

Extra Credit: Start anti-oxidants now. These are Vitamin C and/or E containing topical products. They are often found in serums to be applied before sunscreen, however you may be lucky enough to find a sunscreen that contains them.

Here are some examples of targeted products that we carry:

Smart Start Retinol   Revision Vitamin C lotion
