Pigmentation Irregularities

We understand the emotional impact that pigmentation issues can cause.  The doctors at Dermatology Affiliates have a variety of tools, including medications, procedures and lifestyle changes, to manage and treat pigmentation irregularities.

Vitiligo

With vitiligo, skin loses color and often large patches of lighter skin appear.  Although there is no cure for vitiligo, there are treatments and procedures that can help to stop pigmentation loss and even restore some skin color.

Melasma

Melasma, a common skin condition, is often called the “mask of pregnancy” because it affects many pregnant women. In addition to hormones, sun exposure, and some medications are also triggers for melasma. Melasma causes brown to gray-brown patches on the face, neck, and arms.

There are many treatments for melasma, from medicine to procedures, but no cure. We evaluate your skin to see what treatments are right for you, and stick with you to achieve, and maintain, the best results.

Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation, or the darkening of the skin or nails, is a huge issue for many patients of color and has to be addressed along with the skin condition that triggered it.  Changes in pigmentation may be seen with acne, eczema, lupus and numerous other skin diseases in ethnic skin.  Dr. Taliaferro specializes in treating pigmentation issues in skin of color, although all our dermatologists are trained in treating people of color.

Due to pigmentary changes, certain cosmetic procedures, particularly laser procedures, may not be recommended for some skin types. We work to find the right procedures and treatments for you.

If you need help treating pigmentation irregularities, schedule an appointment with one of our board-certified dermatologists for evaluation and treatment options.
