INTENSE PULSED LIGHT

What is IPL® Photofacial Skin Rejuvenation?

An IPL® Photofacial is an outpatient procedure performed with intense pulsed light lasers that target skin imperfections to correct and improve the look of the skin. Our aestheticians (either PAs or RNs) use a special wand to send beams of light into a precise area of your body or face to erase the imperfections on the skin. It takes about 45 minutes to complete each IPL® session and typically requires 2 to 3 treatments to achieve full results.

QUESTIONS

IPL® Photofacial Skin Rejuvenation FAQ

Our dermatologists can treat several skin conditions with the IPL® laser:

  • Freckles
  • Redness in the face
  • Sun damage and spots

Following an IPL® Photofacial, it is common for the skin in the targeted areas to be a little swollen and red. In rare cases, the skin may appear slightly blistered, but this usually disappears in just a few days.

The number of treatments varies between patients, with most usually requiring two to three treatments with the IPL® lasers to achieve their desired results. Treatments are scheduled about three to four weeks apart with each session lasting about 45minutes.

Most patients see some improvement in brown spots within one to two weeks, but the decrease in redness may not be noticeable until all of the sessions are complete.

Skin is usually more likely to burn when you are exposed to the sun which makes it very important to wear sunscreen when outside. We recommend that these treatments not be done in the summer.

While they vary with each patient, most enjoy the benefits of IPL® Photofacials for at least two years.

IPL® Photofacials allow individuals to have improved skin color. This is beneficial for patients who want their skin to look more polished but do not want other people to notice that they had a cosmetic procedure. However, IPL® treatments are not  recommended for patients who:

  • Are pregnant or nursing
  • Have dark skin
  • Have lupus
  • Scar easily

Insurance companies consider skin rejuvenation treatments to be cosmetic procedures, so they do not cover the costs. At Dermatology Affiliates, we accept major credit cards, personal checks, and cash as forms of payment. Call us to schedule a consultation.
