Family and Interests

Raquel enjoys spending time with her husband, toddler, and Pomeranian. They love to garden, camp, hike, and take trips to the beach. She is fluent in Spanish and participates in Emory’s South Georgia Farmworker Health project – an annual medical mission project to assist migrant farm workers and rural Georgians.

Biography

Raquel was recruited to Atlanta to lead Centers for Disease Control-funded public health projects through Emory University. The work was rewarding, but Raquel enrolled at Emory University’s School of Medicine’s Physician Assistant Program to pursue her childhood dream--helping people through medicine.

Following graduation, Raquel worked in internal medicine (adult and pediatric) at local health clinics that serviced the economically disadvantaged. She also spent one year working in emergency room medicine at some of Atlanta’s busiest ERs. In both positions, she was tasked with treating and stabilizing extremely sick or injured individuals in their moment of greatest need.

As a mother and dermatology patient, Raquel believes firmly that healthy skin, hair, and nails can improve self-confidence and quality of life. Raquel’s goal is to provide extremely high-quality dermatology health care through an interactive client relationship. This is best accomplished by listening to her patients. “I want to know my patients. It is fulfilling and really gives me clues that help with diagnosing patients’ conditions.” She believes it also helps in the development of treatment plans individually catered to each patient. Raquel develops holistic, cautious, and state-of-the-art treatment plans for patients.

Relying on her CDC background, she is a voracious researcher who is motivated by strong research and analytics. “I like to share my knowledge with patients; I share how I develop my recommendations. However, books don’t have all the answers. If my patient has a gut feeling about something, I listen.” This approach has fostered a great level of trust and positive health outcomes.

Raquel has co-authored several publications in scientific, peer-reviewed journals. She has also been a speaker at national conventions held by the Centers for Disease Control and American Public Health Association.

Raquel is a member of Georgia Association of Physician Assistants, American Academy of Physician Assistants, Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, and Georgia Dermatology Physician Assistants.
